However, after reading many mentions about insecurity I recently read that nfs is now deprecated, because of its security issues. Unfortunately I can't remember where I read it, so I can't give you the opportunity to explain why it isn't a cause for concern.
For most home users, security requirements are relative, of course. Getting something working is the first requirement, with the chance to harden security later. I'm a little concerned, though, that the multiple choices that are a benefit of linux can also be confusing to a newbie. Whichever path the original poster chooses, there will be someone here that can help him get started, and check his security.
