having been looking for a linux equivalent to Google Earth
I found this

there was an RPM available ..it loaded and ran :-)
anyone else using it?
There's a Mandriva RPM for it, too. I installed it and tried
it, but the interface is pretty bad. I haven't used it since.

I tried the Mandriva rpm under 10.1, and nothing happened. ps showed
the program was running, but nothing ever appeared on the screen.
When I started it from the command line, it stopped after giving the
message "CONNECTTOSERVER". I'm guessing for whatever reason it
couldn't contact the server. I wonder if the firewall is getting in
the way (didn't think it would stop an outgoing connection, but I'm
no expert in this area).
I noticed that the Mandriva rpm is for version 1.0.2, but the latest
source release is 1.0.4. Don't have the time to try building from
source.
I installed 1.0.2. When executed from command line, it comes up. I
select a map and it puts lots of info in the terminal window along with
several " error=1 errorstring, request aborted" messages. When
finished I am left with a big white circle in a black square--not very
interesting. terminal.
I am currently looking at the gulf of Arden at 100 meter resolution
you have to click on one of the urls and select a source
zoom in and out with your mouse wheel
I do select a url from the list on the left of the window. I am able to
display marks like city names and flags, but if I select a map from one
of the urls, the globe is just covered with large grayscale rectangles.
Did you use the one Landsat7 100m/pixel ?
Might also be a function related to the video driver and overlay
Easy way to find out I'll install it on my desktop box which does not have
accelerated graphics [been running it on laptop]
if you expect it to run as well as google earth, it really will need
accel graphics, but the accel graphics may not be the "whole" answer
