A config file somewhere is probably using the old addressing system that just will not work with later kernels. A clean install avoids this.
One possibility - examine the dotfiles in your home directory. Rename any that look as though they may be used by cdrecord/k3b or whatever. They will be recreated when you restart the application. If you have any problems it's no biggie to just rename the old config file back. Anne -- Registered Linux User No.293302 (http://counter.li.org/) Mandriva hints & tips: http://twiki.mdklinuxfaq.org
