Thanks folks. You gave me a direction to go in. I checked what services
I had running in Mandrake control center and netplugd was shut off. I turned
it on and all my problems were solved.
It has been great to learn a few of the basics of networks, I just wish
that id did not have to be on a week when I am covered up with work. LOL For
what it is worth a lot of my problems along the way were solved when I found
a restart the router button in the router interface. I have also found a
number of other things in the router interface that were kind of flakey and
in reading user comments about the Netgear FVS318 router I am by no means the
first person to have some odd problems with with this model. I have never
heard mention of anyone having to restart a router but with this model that
seems to be what it takes for the router to detect when some types of changes
are made. I may be wrong but that seems odd to me. I must admit that many of
the problems that I had were caused by me not knowing what I was doing but
this odd ball router made the learning curve a lot steeper.
I guess that what I am saying is that anyone shopping for a router may want
to keep away from a Netgear FVS318

Thanks for all the help everyone. I am now off to see if there will be any
challenges to printing and scanning across the network.

     Marc
