Back in the 2005LE days, I went through this same thing.  It took a bit of 
googling to get the solution (try entering the generic portion of the 
"///file/var..." URL into the google searchbar.)  If I can dig it back up, 
I'll post again.  I didn't have the same sort of problem once I installed 
2006.
