In 2006 there is actually a good reason why you might want to enable pingsDerek,
between a firewalled box and the local network. The Mandriva Shorewall
firewall protects itself from bot the internet and the local network so
normally pinging will not work, but with 2006 we now have the "Devices" icon
on the desktop, and within that folder it is possible to view local network
resources such as Fish (ssh) enabled computers on the local network.
But for the local network view in Devices to work correctly, then the 'lisa'
service must be running, and lisa uses 'pings' to discover other network
devices. So here is how to enable pings in the local network:-
Edit the file /etc/shorewall/rules and at the bottom (not the very bottom) ad d
the line
ACCEPT loc fw icmp 8
If venus has a printer attached to it, or you want to do samba or fish
networking to it, you will also need to open up those services to the local
network. Newbies often do not appreciate that the shorewall firewall is very
secure and will protect the firewalled computer from attack from the local
network as well as the internet. So by default **nothing** is allowed to
connect to a firewalled computer.
If you trust your local network you can open up the firewall to the local
network by editing /etc/shorewall/policy and changing the line
loc fw REJECT to
loc fw ACCEPT
After editing any file restart shorewall with
shorewall restart
in a root terminal.
BTW: To edit a file as root hit Alt+F2 and enter
kdesu konqueror
in the run box that appears. You will then have a root copy of konqueror,
right click on a file to edit it with kwrite or kedit.
BTW: The next question is likely to be how to network between 2 computers.
Do this in a root terminal
urpmi openssh-server openssh-client
service sshd start
urpmi lisa
service lisa start
Now click in the Devices icon on your desktop and hopefully you will see the
icon 'Local Network' then inside that you will see your remote computer,
inside that will be a folder called FISH, inside that is the remote file
system (you will be prompted for a password first)
Have fun

Thanks for your advices. My domestic network is working pretty well now. Just one more question: where I can find the URL name of my printer. I need it for installing it in Vmware-5.5 (guest sistem WinXP, host system MDV2006). Thanks in advance.
Paul
