May be a problem in the kmail settings between different versions (esp. when 
going back to an older version). Try the following from your home directory:

cd .kde/share
mv apps/kmail apps/kmail.old
mv config/kmailrc config/kmailrc.old

Then try again. Of course, your previous email settings (identities and such) 
will be gone, and will have to be recreated. But the info is still there in 
the *.old file/directory if you need to retrieve something.
