That's it! Apparently I deleted (moved to Trash) from Root and then emptied
trash on my user partition. Deleting all the files
in /root/.local/share/Trash took the / partition from 100% down to 13.5%
full.
Thanks to everyone for the quick and effective response. I'm back to replying
in KMail instead of on my WinXP laptop.
