The recent xorg 6.9.0 update to 2006 appears to have changed the mapping
of the buttons on some mice.
Reading some of the xorg docs seem to indicate this is by design.
According to my understanding, the change was done to accommodate newer
mice with side-movable scroll wheels.
This has the effect of pushing the traditional side-button numbers up by
2. On an Intellimouse Explorer, the side-buttons would have been
numbered 6 and 7, but the new xorg numbers them 8 and 9. This breaks
Firefox and other apps that want to see buttons 6 and 7 as forward and
back inputs.
The xorg.conf file retains the original stanzas:
Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "6 7"
This worked with the previous xorg release.
What's the best way to restore the original button numbering? I don't
want to run imwheel, and am hoping there is an easy way to re-map these
back to the original numbering scheme of 6 and 7.
I am also wondering why a non side-wheel mouse was configured this way?
