Thanks again ET No improvement, but I have solved the problem by getting a bigger hammer. I found a win4lin 2.6.12 kernel in contrib. Installing this, all runs normally. Even managed to get my old Canon inkjet printer going, which had been reluctant under the original 2006 install. I don't think struggling to get a 2.6.14 kernel going is worthwhile.
