In my previous setup under SUSE I had an SSH connection to an external

I did not think more of it at the time since it worked perfectly. But
when I FTP the .ssh directory from
RedHat box to Mandriva (ex SUSE) box this does not work. Connection

It may of course be some ssh server that needs to be started, but I have

Any ideas?

If your objective is to transfer files then the easiest way would by Kfish.
Set up KDE with all components including Kbear.
Set up eather or both computers as SSH servers.
Set up ping to ping one to the other and ping for connection.
Establish SSH connection. From one to the other or from both to its
counterpart.
If all above is working well then go to Konqueror and for URL use fish://
<Numerical address of other computer>
and you should have a very nice file transfer connection.

I have solved file transfer between the to boxed by means of gFTP,
which works very well.
The reason for ssh is to take control of one computer from the other. In
some cases it is convenient, for example
when I did experience screen freeze: Then I could switch over to the old
Red Hat box, establish ssh connection to the Mandriva box,
and stop X11 via this back door. Then I could have logged in again and
the freeze would be resolved.
I also had a similar freeze problem under SUSE 9.1, but that happened
much more frequently, so I ended up running SUSE from
the back door (ssh), via the Red Hat box. This worked just fine, but in
the end I decided to kill the beast and install Mandrake.
But this beast seems to live on. Nothing i easy.
