Either edit the file /etc/lilo and insert acpi=on in the lines starting 
'append' and then run lilo (as root) or else use Mandriva Control 
Centre>Boot>BootLoader  There is a button there to enable acpi

You do not need to have acpi working in order to test hibernate.
Simply typing the command hibernate as you have been doing should work.

It might be an idea to upgrade to 2006.
