Either edit the file /etc/lilo and insert acpi=on in the lines starting 'append' and then run lilo (as root) or else use Mandriva Control Centre>Boot>BootLoader There is a button there to enable acpi You do not need to have acpi working in order to test hibernate. Simply typing the command hibernate as you have been doing should work.
