I looked this morning after rebooting and it was there, but I also noticed that in mcc/hardware/options Autodetect Modem was checked. Just for a test, I unchecked and rebooted. The sym link was still there but Autodetect Modem was rechecked, I guess by the system! Anyway the modem is working -- at least for sending fax.
