Yes I eventually worked that out myself. I had convinced myself that because /boot/ was on hdd1 that would be where that setting should point. I tried setting the BIOS to point to my second drive, and got the dreaded L999999... So changed to boot=/dev/hdc and all is more or less well. Now the netraverse kernel is stalling loading ALSA drivers, but that is another problem to worry at.
