Leaves me with an X cursor on blue screen. Can switch to a console and
shut down from there, but cannot use X windows again. Seems like KDE is
shut down (X cursor back) but X windows does not shut down and return
  control to KDM.

>>Sound card not working right.
I may need some tweaks, but I found the basic problem: A couple of missing
hardware jumpers on the motherboard, to route the sound to the back jack.
Header is there for motherboards that bring out the front jacks to a
header. Mine has little cables that plug into the jacks on the back, so
doesn't use the header, and needs the jumpers on the header. I figured
that out by dual-booting into windows (which I keep for diagnostics like
this only), and playing with the fancy utility Gigabyte sent to set up sound.

I have not done the Christmas era updates, since past updates did not help.
There is no Christmas version for X86-64, and I am on a dial-up connection
(40-48K).

Standard. I am behind an IPCop firewall.

Actually, there is more wrong with the USB than just the permission. The
system does not mount the USB drive at all.

Let's start with my old USB drive, which has less problems (I think it did
come up read-write, but it does not mount).

Here is what dmesg said about that drive:

usb 2-6: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4

usb-storage: device scan complete

It does not mount the drive, and it is not visible in the "Devices" Icon on
my desktop.

I can mount it with the command: mount /dev/sdd1 /mnt/oldies
but only if I su to root, and then all the files come up with file access
for root (and root group) only. Not very useful.

When I try to get to it via Konqueror->Go->Storage Media I get the error
message: "KDE mediamanager not running"

Here is my /etc/fstab:

That was a bomb. Mandriva would not boot up. Hung during hard drive
initialization (I have SATA drives). I copied these last few lines off the
screen as it was stuck (I keep it in verbose mode):

Loading libata.ko module
Loading sata_nv.ko module

In a normal boot that section of dmesg looks like:
