I found it, did as you advised, and everything works now as advertised. I'm surprised the 2.4 kernel was available in the LILO or in /lib/modules/. I asked for the 2.6 kernel during the installation. The hard drive ML 10.1 is installed on is really a new Western Digital USB external 40Gb HDD. I reformatted it from VFAT to EXT3 plus added a little Linux swap partition. The IDE HDD in this portable sort of died over a year ago -- sometimes it fades in, but mostly it's not there. I've been using a Knoppix LiveCD and a 2.2Gb Flash drive with this machine, but I missed having a regular installation and decided to try an external HDD. It works great. Oh well, the 2.6 kernel is working the way I want it to, so I'll just stick the 2.4 kernel presence and panic in life's little unexplained mysteries file to meditate on later.
