I may try what you did, but I am not sure how to remove cups 'completely'. I used MCC to look at packages contining cups. It listed about 7. Do you just remove them? One thing is strange; there are two package with the same name, 'libgnomecups' but different version. Why two? Why gnome? I am using kde. In the mean time I look around for the latest source.
