I had the same experience. The 1.0 version does not do 1.5 upgrade.
What I did was to install Firefox 1.5 (from source) into a
subdirectory (not part of root partition) I own where I usually put my
personal programs.
ADVANTAGES:
1. I can upgrade my Firefox without need for root access.
2. I can upgrade my Mandriva Linux OS (even from scratch) without affecting my
customizations for my personal Firefox. I can readily run my personal Firefox.
