You might want to look at the KDE applet Kdevmon. It places a small graph into the KDE panel which is live and shows upload and download activity. It has a larger window that can also be popped up to look at things. You can set the scales on the graph, and easily see what is going on with network activity.

Gkrellm also has the ability to graph network throughput, control the ppp connection, show lots of other graphs too, and has a lot of add-ons, but it does take some desktop space.

I use both.

Kdevmon and Gkrellm are available in contribs.
