I don't run the BBC version as I have been running the climate
prediction module for some months before the BBC got into it. I
have also noticed this behaviour on mt xp box as well as my MDK
box. I installed it as a user, so I can't see that installing as
root is causing it. It should run the same as root or user. Root
version might have priority over resources maybe? There is the
obvious security risk running it as root. I don't run the
graphical interface very often on the MDK box. I just start it
from the command line and let it chug on in the background.
Going to my account I see that some of the results had errors
and I see when it starts up it sends a message home to report
results and fetch new work, so perhaps it is seeing that the
work unit has errors and is starting it from scratchGuy Faulks

and he was going to blow them up !
