I just did that, commented out every modeline entry in the 'monitor' section 
except the working one and it works - after rebooting.  I was under the 
impression that the x server restarted on a logout and was a bit surprised to 
see that it wasn't.  

Anyway, in summary it looks like the xlogin monitor selection is simply the 
first modeline in the monitor list.
