Did by chance anything happen to /etc/resolv.conf?

Can you ping IP addresses?
Yahoo for instance is 68.142.197.64

No, I can't ping anything. The /etc/resolv.conf file is fine and has the proper nameservers in it. I'm suspecting that my adapter went the way of all hardware. Also, I found that, if I try to use the MCC to set things up, everything takes BUT when I do ifconfig, the gateway doesn't appear! Without that, the box doesn't know where to go.

Any ideas as to what the heck happened? Everything worked until three days ago when I alst updated the machine.
