Paul and all,
Another anomoly I just noticed.
When I turn on the machine, the port on the router is lit, showing
that it sees the machine. As it boots up, the port goes off and then
back on. But, when I sign in, it also goes off and on and then, once
the session is reestablished, it goes out again. ifconfig still shows
the adapter as UP. Very strange.
I hope I don't have to re-install the OS. I did also notice that, in
the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0, that the gateway
address was missing. I added it there but it hasn't helped any.

IP address problem? Using DHCP or static? Has this changed since the
last time it was working? Sounds more probable than a hardware failure
by the way you described it, but do you have another network card you
can try? Sometimes, at this stage of the game, it's even worth trying a
(gasp) reboot....?
Good luck!
