Ben, sorry about the delay in write about the results of your suggestion but it has taken some time to climb down the telegraph pole and reach my PC. Anyway, it worked just fine, so thank you very much for your help. Just for the record, the essential issue is to use the original version of ndiswrapper (from sourceforge), but the HowTo is very helpful.

It's for LE2005 but may work for 10.1.  It is outdated for MDV2006.
I don't know if it works for USB but you may be able to glean something useful
from it.
