It doesn't look like this has been mentioned but have you tried clicking
on the little cat (kat) running on your toolbar somewhere to the right
of the desktop boxes?

Kat has been known to/blamed for all kinds of these things and I've
found that pausing it when I'm using the system actually does work.  So
give that a try and see what happens!
