Avoid any of the new iRiver ones, they only support WinXP, same goes for anything labelled with PlaysForSure or MTP Microsoft Transfer Protocol. iPods are always a good option if you're happy not to have FM radio. The Nano is particularly popular in the running community with its tiny size and weight and sexy looks, there's the new Nike pedometer integration, plenty of arm-straps and other cases, and you can play with Podzilla (http://ipodlinux.org/Podzilla) if you can ever prise it out of her hands :-) It's supported under Linux by an add-on library, programs like Amarok and Gtkpod integrate well. Basically anything that says it's UMS (USB Mass Storage) and not some proprietory or MS standard should work as a USB drive. You'll be hard pressed to find anything running Linux, most have little need to. That said, there is the aformentioned Podzilla, and there is Rockbox (http://www.rockbox.org/) which is an OSS firmware for various players. Cheers! John.
