From time to time I simply use the cli and do:
urpmi.update -a
urpmi --auto-select
Many people put this in a file and setup a cron job to have it executed once a day/week/month/etc. The system stays up to date easily and maintenance free, although I think you need to add something to the urpmi --auto-select in order for it to execute without prompting.
