Phil,

I don't know if this is valid or not, but I have seen cases where some programs require alsa and some do not.  At one time I was not using the alsa driver and some of my programs wouldn't have sound.  Changing to alsa seemed to help.  I am sorry I cannot be more clear, but this was a while ago and I am not really all that familiar with it.
