After posting the request I did some further exploration of the menu
and discovered that there was another area for installing language, etc.
After completing that I retested the spell check and it now works.

Owen, what version of mandriva/Mandrake do you use? What version
of open office do you use? Does open office come on the Mandriva
cd or did you download it? Do you have the newest Kernal installed?
