Thanks Pete, that's the first part of the puzzle. I've edited that file, and 
I'll see after I reboot if it fixes the assignment problem.

But the second part of the puzzle is how that file gets modified, and how do I 
stop it from changing the numbers already assigned. Is it harddrake2 that 
overwrites this when it finds a new ethernet-capable device? Is there some 
way to stop it from making the newest hardware eth0 and increasing the number 
on the oldest hardware?
