Hi,
I have installed mdk 2006, on my lap-top. I have also installed open –
office which was with this package.
After installation I can see open-office in the menu and a task bar,
but when I click on it to open, some strange thing happens.
Sand clock keeps on rotating for 10 sec. or so, showing that the oo is
getting loaded. But after that nothing happens, clock disappers, no oo
opens-up.
Then I uninstalled oo from the system and reinstalled the same. But no
improvement. Oo does not open.
Any idea what is happening? And how to get oo running?
Don't you think that because of such small funny problems and many
more, linux does not become popular as it should be?
Thanks,
Jayant.

It's not those problems per se as much as the whole money thing. See,
the problem isn't the developers, but rather greed. Look at it this way:
Microsoft charges 100 bucks for each install of Windows (or hundreds of
thousands for server editions). Now they are making a killing. If you
are the average Joe Consumer, and you knew about this, you would at
first be repulsed. But Microsoft has done a great job of marketing their
crap.
Why do companies choose Windows instead of Linux/Apple software?
Probably because they can license with Microsoft and have financial
security. They know if they all work together, they can earn a little
more money. Plus Microsoft has done a great job at making sure Joe
Consumer only knows 1 or 2 things: Windows is a better choice because
everything will work more, and if there is another OS, it's OS X. They
don't know about Linux because no one ever promotes it. Why? No one is
paying them to make money to promote it. Microsoft would, if their
product was Linux.
Microsoft doesn't want to admit it, but Linux is better. Open source
software is better coded and they can't take it. Proof: they stole some
Firefox code to make IE7 more "secure" and have tabs because of the GNU
GPL. Also they stole some of the Linux security concepts to make Windows
"better".
If Linux had more moolah to run the gambit about marketing, companies
like Adobe, Dell, and NVidia would take a better look at Linux. That's
the reason there aren't many games, nor good hardware support, or
anything. It's unfair, but that's the way things work. There have been
rumors that Google may try to get into the act with things like
Goobuntu, but no one can say for sure. If Google did fund things, then
we know Linux would improve because money would be there to back up the
OS that is really better written and give it what it deserves. I
wouldn't be surprised if Google did pull out a move like this as much as
they hate Microsoft, but let's be real: it's a money pit for a while for
Google.
To sum it all up: MONEY! Donate to a Linux distro $1,000,000,000 and I'm
sure things will improve. Any rich takers? That's what I thought.
Paul
