Thank you so much for the responses! The information has proved most helpful. The command i sought was the ampersand after the application name. I do not know why I thought it went in front of the name and not after, probably because I spend way too much time bouncing back and forth between M$ and Linux.
Also too, those who suggested other modes of placing the terminal in the background, thank you. I will save all of your mails for future reference, I am quite sure they will come in handy. It is such community collaboration that makes Linux what it is.
