As    "su" or "root" in a console type "ifconfig" to see whether eth0 or eth1 
is there.
If it is and hasn't been given an IP adress, do: "dhclient eth0" and wait to 
get one. That is, of course if you're accessing a dhpc enabled gateway/router.
