I keep it simple and make only two partitions: / (that is, root),
and /home. I make root 6GB, and give the rest to /home. That
allows you not to worry about your personal files when you
install Mandriva 2008 next year, and it gives you the maximum
amount of space for movies, your MP3/ogg collection, etc.

A relatively full home is about 5GB, so I have a good 1GB
safety margin. If you're going to install big games, like UT2004,
you can either install them to your home directory, or to the
default place on the root partition, in which case you'll want
to give / much more space, If you want to run a web server with
lots of video or whatever, you'll have to think along similar
lines.
