In principle you can delete everything in it with the exception of sockets
with a date stamp beyond the date/time of your last bootup.

If you want this automated look at the package tmpwatch.

Use at your own risk. One exception: if your last boot was a recovery from a
crash of some sort, there could be remains of opened documents in there
that might be useful when starting the related app again. For example
OpenOffice is good  at restoring it's own problem closures. But only if the
files used at crash time are still around.
