I seemed to have sorted it on my machine. It seems I was trying to install an 
earlier version of audacity from the one that was installed. I un-installed 
the newer version and then the older version that was causing the error 
message. I have reinstalled the newer version without any problem. It seems 
the software manager does not update its records.
