The original reason for packaging as RPM's was to overcome the
undesirable tendencies of the factory Nvidia installer. Specifically,
in the case of the factory installer, Mesa libs are overwritten by
Nvidia-altered mesas that give you glx functionality.

This is not reversed when the factory uninstall feature is used, it does
not replace what was overwritten. Subsequently, if you install an ATI
card in the system, glx functionality will not be there...since of
course you have an ATI card attempting to use some Nvidia altered libs.
(go figure. ;) ) After that of course, putting the Nvida card back in
makes everything work just fine. Once again, go figure.

The rpm's are derived closely from the factory installer. This is most
probably the reason for your rpm's misbehavior.

The advantage of using the rpm's for your OS is SUPPOSED to be that
files are tracked they way they should be and (ideally) when rpm handles
the uninstall things are done correctly. In the case of Fedora, we have
the livna repositories and both ATI and Nvidia rpm flavors reside there.
The difference with Fedora is that those corresponding rpm's behave
correctly with regard to install/uninstall of the nvidia/ati drivers.
Factory installer ass-hattery is taken into consideration with Fedora
Core repos.
