Which window manager are you using?
X will give you as much screen real estate as your video card has
memory to handle; this is usually *MUCH* more than your monitor can
display at any one time. A kinder, gentler way to handle it than what
you have described is to use a window manager that understands virtual
desktops, such as KDE or GNOME.
