There is nothing wrong with FreeBSD tar AFAIK.  I use FreeBSD 4.3-RELEASE
and XFree86-4.1.0.  XFree was installed using the binaries and following
the instructions.  I would suggest reading the install instructions again.  
It specifically states that you need to use the customized version of the
GNU tar utility called "extract", and that the .tgz files are packaged in
a platform-independent gzipped tar format.
