Yea slackware is very hard, I started it with it myself but I had to do
SHITLOADS of reading (sorry for the offensive language) and then I really
mean a lot thus. If you're starting with slackware it won't be uncommon if
you read like 8 to 10 howto's and several manpages on the first day. I wish
you a lot of luck. I really liked it but then again, my goal was to learn as
in-depth as possible as fast as possible, my goal was not just running it
without hassle. If that's what you're after I'd go with mandrake, I
installed it at a friend of mine and that run really smooth with some nice
graphics and configuration utilities, it's really user friendly and freely
downloadable. If you care less about the colors and smooth graphics but
still want some nice configuration utilities I'd go with SuSE I got really
good experiences with that too, especially the newer versions. Unfortunately
you can't download iso files for that so you'll have to buy it in a store
near you, however it does come with some comprehensive manuals and 90 days
installation support. Also it has some nice stickers and a tux button :-)).
If you don't like either of those then I'd get red hat, red hat is
personally my last choice.........
Anyways in short, nice colors really smooth & good functionality mandrake,
less nice colors all of the rest SuSE. Then again, this is just my opinion,
distributions and whether they are good or not is mainly taste and
experience. At work we use SuSE since this is commercially supported. If
you have a fast line downloading the mandrake iso's is the cheapest way to
go and they work perfectly.
