Just to archive the note for anyone else with problems: XFree86 4.1.0 behaved
even worse, completely locking the machine frequently. Going back down to 3.3.6
seems to have fixed the problems. A different machine with a Permedia 2 had
similar problems and was also fixed by going back to 3.3.6.
