It's worth checking the permissions on this file.
Here are mine:

drwxr-xr-x 20 root root 4096 Sep 15 00:34 /var
[jeremy@linux jeremy]$ ls -ld /var/log
drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 4096 Sep 16 08:33 /var/log
[jeremy@linux jeremy]$ ls -ld /var/log/XFree86.*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 24249 Sep 16 08:43 /var/log/XFree86.0.log
