Hmmm - that's not very explicit information, and I have never used slackware
but I'll assume that you want to rename the file so that it has an "x"
somewhere in it so that a particular utility will know it's type.
In unix, there is a file called /etc/magic and under my redhat linux it's
/usr/share/magic. Do a man magic for more info, but basically it uses
the first two bytes of a file to identify the file type - rather than a file
extension. Therefore, usually, in unix and linux, you can name the file
anything and the system still knows the file type. If there is not an entry
in the the magic file, then it will try to guess by looking at the content.
You could, out of interest only, use the "file" command to see if this file
that you are talking of is recognised. If it is, then perhaps renaming it
will not help.
However, if you do want to rename it, then just use mv
eg mv fred fred.x
Does that help?
