I think a combination of this configuration software is best and they should be used to illustrate how to manipulate the config file directly, since it is inevitable that the user will have to do that anyway, it seems. Text configuration files are everywhere in Linux and are powerful and intuitive tools to use, actually. But people who are just starting in Linux are typically oriented around a GUI and so are terrified (I was ...) of the text configuration files. The configuration file for XFree86 is a great place to start, because it effects the GUI itself so dramatically. It is real educational to see how the configuration software creates and/or alters the configuration files

Subject: [Newbie]Preferred way for configuration?
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi,
I'm writing step-by-step documentation for Linux newbies, and the first hard
part is the X configuration, which depends a lot on the video card + monitor
+ mouse combination.
What is the preferred way to setup the latest XFree86 (4.1) ?
By "preferred", I mean the one that detects most recent hardware and gives a
usable result at the end (ie at least 640x480 in 16 colors).
I made a list of choices, containing xf86config, xf86cfg, XF86Setup, and
Xconfigurator, but for now, as I've read, xf86cfg seems the most apropriate.
Thank you very much for your great help,
Nicolas Marchildon
