Thanks for your suggestions. I am running version 4.0.3 of XFree86, I have 
tried your first suggestion in terms of 8/16/24 on 800x600, with no apparent 
success. I have not been able to find out what the horizontal sync. range is 
for the laptop, Compaq will not give it to me. I must admit to being 
concerned about playing with this number, I have read warnings that, making 
it too high can damage the monitor. I did notice that when I made it 60-100, 
the screen changed to a full screen, but then X-windows did not show up at 
all. Further, when I cntl-alt-backspace, it went back to the < 1/4 visible 
sliver on the right hand side.
