Your mouse pointer should certainly be there...
Are you sure you have the right mouse driver?
If needed post config and messages (one gets more
infos by redirecting the log startx 2>yourlogfile)
in the Section "screen you should have a DefaultDepth
set it to 16
I am assuming you are not using the vga driver which
is only 8 with 640x480....
