This is pretty old so I hope you got an answer to this. Just in case:

There are 3 ways I know of:

  1) rc.d script in /usr/local/etc/rc.d

  2) /etc/ttys
    
                   :
       ttyv8   "/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm -nodaemon"  xterm   off secure
                   :

  3) There is an X-wrapper port to allow X to be started by a user. I have not
     used this one.

I use 1 and 2 on various machines. The only thing agains #2 is that you can not
shutdown X. You will have much better luck with this in the questions mailing
list.
