I've never tried this with images, but with text there are three potential
methods:

1.  If you have a 3-button mouse
        Select the item with the mouse (holding down the left mouse
button).  
        Then move to the destination and press the middle button.
        (on a 2-button mouse pressing both buttons sometime works.)

2.  Select the item to copy and press CTRL-C.
        Go to the destination and press CTRL-V

3.  Select the item to copy and press CTRL-INSERT
        Go to the destination and press SHIFT-INSERT
