My guess would be you need to play with some mode lines?
If you have the documentation for the display, you can manually 
enter mode lines into /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 For expamples, 
see /etc/X11/XF86Config

Oh, they will look similar to this:

ModeLine "640x480"       25.17  640  648  744  784  480  482  484  509 -hsync -vsync
