Ok, I've been trying, unsuccessfully, to get RedHat Linux 7.1 up and
running with XFree86 on my machine, which features a nice and shiny Radeon
VE. I believe the version of XF86 that ships with RH 7.1 is 3.3.6 but I'm
not sure. During the installation, it recognized that I had a Radeon, but
it doesn't list the VE model and none of the drivers seem to initialize my
card when I run the test nor when actually booting Linux. (In fact, when
booting RH, I get the text login prompt, and the display flashes repeatedly
trying to initialize X; making linux all but unusable from the host machine.)

As a result, I'm in the process of downloading Debian 2.2 r3 to see if I
have a better overall experience, and I noticed that it definitely ships
with 3.3.6; so I took a peek at the XFree86.org site, saw 4.10 listed, and
saw that it supports the Radeon. Does this newer version support the Radeon
VE? Has anyone confirmed it? And what steps can I take to upgrade from
3.3.6 to 4.1x? Would it be easier not to install 3.3.6 with Debian, and
then start from scratch with 4.1x?

Thanks,
Raymond
